Consistency is king

1 minute read

Stop trying to fit all accessibility issues you find into an "accessibility sprint." That's neither feasible nor sustainable.

Start being consistent.

You're unlikely to fix an inaccessible product in a sprint. You might fix all the issues in the code, but they'll just pop up again later. That's because accessibility isn't a technical problem. The problem is the culture and that's deeply ingrained in the organisation's DNA.

You're also unlikely to build an accessible product from day one. You'll make mistakes and the best way forward is to own up to them, learn from them and don't repeat them.

Anyone can skip a fast food drive once. Still doesn't mean they're eating healthy.

Do it enough times and it becomes the norm. Stick to the norm and you're consistent. Stay consistent and you're living a healthy life.

Look at accessibility with every decision, design, mockup, code change, test and acceptance criteria. Do it consistently and you can't help but ship an accessible product.
