I've published this newsletter every day for the past 945 days.
I'm going to stop doing that.
I'll still keep writing, just not on a schedule.
When I started, writing every day was useful. It forced me to think, notice things, form opinions and put them into words. And I'm glad I did it. There are things I've written here that I probably wouldn't have thought through properly otherwise. It helped me a lot and it's helped others as well.
There's also something incredibly satisfying about knowing I showed up and did it for 945 days straight.
But somewhere along the way, publishing every day became the goal.
I'd sit down because there was an email to write, not because there was something I particularly wanted to say. Some days those two things happened to coincide and that was amazing. Increasingly though, lately, they didn't.
And that's backwards if you ask me.
I don't want to manufacture something to say just because another 24 hours have passed. I'd rather write because I've noticed something, learned something, changed my mind about something or simply have an idea I can't resist exploring.
So that's what I'm going to do.
From now on, I'll write when I have something I think is worth sending you. That might be twice in one week. It might be nothing for a month. I don't really know.
And I rather like that.
If you've been reading for a while, thank you. If you've replied to one or some of my emails, thank you. Knowing that there are actual people on the other end of these emails has made this little experiment much more interesting.
945 days was a good run. Shit, it was an amazing run!
I'll see you when I have something worth sharing.
