I notice there's a push for a more accessible and inclusive web. That's great news and a really good time to be alive! I don't care if it's because of new regulation, an increase in awareness or just happenstance. I'm all here for it.
The problem I see is there are two groups that hash it out online. Those who want change and those who want to change.
People who want change:
- Speak up and support accessibility initiatives on social media
- Examine and highlight inaccessible websites
- Attend conferences and seminars on web accessibility
- Sign petitions for stricter accessibility regulations
People who want to change:
- Learn and implement the WCAG in their web projects
- Actively seek out feedback from users with disabilities and peers
- Develop or contribute to open-source accessibility tools
- Experiment with assistive technologies
Both groups play a role in advancing web accessibility. We need both, even if we only look up to one and judge the other.
