Now not how

2 minutes read

What can you do right now? Stop asking how! How do I create an accessible website? How do I annotate designs? How do I test with a screen reader?

How gets you into the weeds and forces you to go deep and explore all the nooks and crannies. If you already have a lot of accessibility issues that you know of, you're already in a hole, so stop digging!

What can you do right now to start climbing out of that hole?

  • Can you fix one issue that's been sitting in your backlog for a long time?
  • Can you fix your main call to action button colour contrast?
  • Can you make sure the currently focused element is clearly visible and visually highlighted?
  • Can you fix that one link that doesn't have a clear, concise and unique link text?
  • Can you add visible labels to your contact form?
  • Can you make sure every page has a defined language?
  • Can you add alternative text to the images on your Services page?

Don't worry about how long it will take, how much it'll cost or who else needs to be on board.

You'll realise you don't need a plan, you don't need to understand the WCAG, you don't need to take a course on accessibility and you don't even need permission from someone.

Just sit down and do one thing right now.
