The weekly 1%: Be kind

2 minutes read

There's little doubt we live in a world where speed is a powerful currency. Everything is fighting for your attention. You see ads on TV, ads when you go on a walk outside, ads online. As you scroll mindlessly through your Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, you barely give things a second look.

You want to get to the end, where there isn't one!

And so we forget that behind all the ads, the selfies, the articles and emails, there are real people.

They might not always have the best of days. And a warm smile, a sincere compliment or a helping hand can improve their entire mood.

It usually takes just one kind word to change someone's entire day.

That kind words costs you nothing and, especially in this field of accessibility, it can be particularly powerful.

  • For those who experience social isolation, your friendly interaction can help them feel more connected and valued.
  • To those affected by low self-esteem and those facing discrimination and feeling marginalised, your kind word can reinforce their sense of worth.
  • Holding the door and helping someone across the street can make a significant difference in their day.
  • Acts of kindness especially towards people with disabilities can help educate others.

I'll never ask for payment or any compensation for these emails. If you found them useful in any way so far, all I ask is that you help one person today. And for that, I thank you!

Did you enjoy this bite-sized message?

I send out short emails like this every day to help you gain a fresh perspective on accessibility and understand it without the jargon, so you can build more robust products that everyone can use, including people with disabilities.
