The weekly 1%: Making headway

Add screen reader text

I saw this on a project planning document the other day.

It was just an idea of something we will want to do before calling the project done. It wasn't a proper issue in a backlog. It wasn't assigned to anyone. It wasn't properly defined and lacked details.

But it was there. And I didn't put it there. I didn't ask for it to be put there.

Someone else thought it would be a good idea. A good idea to pay attention to the barriers we could introduce to people with visual impairments or other cognitive disabilities by releasing the feature without "screen reader text."

Yes, it's vague and probably needs a bit of education as to what a screen reader is, what "its text" is, why we need to account for it, how to ensure screen reader support, and so on.

But from the big four (awareness, knowledge, leadership buy-in and budget), I could tick off awareness. I'm making headway.

And I was thrilled when I saw it. It shows that constant effort with small non-aggressive nudges and no big waves can steer a big ship in the right direction.

So keep doing what you're doing! Whatever it is. Don't give up. You never know when and how other people will surprise you.
