The weekly 1%: Saying yes

Everyone advises to say no more often. The argument goes, every time you say yes, you're saying no to other possibilities.

When I start any client relationship, I discuss the importance of being open and receptive. It goes both ways too. The client can make some outrageous requests. It's my job to say no and guide them through to a better option.

Saying yes to them isn't in their best interest. Every decision we face together will involve allocating the right resources, taking on technical debt, legal risks, scope creep. So we should say no to them more often.

True.

In most cases. In business.

Not so in life.

Say yes to your partner. Say yes to your children. Say yes to your pets. You'll never run out of yes-es and you'll never miss opportunities by doing so.

My dog died two days ago. He was my best friend. I wish I had said yes to him more often.
