With everything going on in our private lives and in our work lives, we fall into a trap. And we don't even know it.
We go with the flow and we stop making decisions.
A lot of the times, it may seem like it's not important decisions. None of them are. One small thing here, one tiny thing there. No decision needed.
And so we sleepwalk through it all with someone else at the wheel.
For accessibility, this is dangerous. Because most of the times, most of the people on most of the teams would rather not deal with accessibility. It's not important. Colour contrast - a small thing here. Keyboard navigation - a tiny thing there.
But this is a huge decision that they shouldn't take lightly. It affects millions of people.
And so we must remember we have a choice. We can choose to continue sleepwalking and not deal with accessibility. We won't have to block releases because the colour contrast is off. We won't have to reject PRs because the form controls are labeled. We won't have to rework the shopping cart because it's not usable with just a keyboard.
Or we can choose to wake up and do all that work. Yes, it'll take more time. Yes, it'll probably cost a bit more. Yes, designers and developers would actually have to talk to each other (imagine that).
But you can't swim without getting wet.
We always have a choice. Wake up!
You can't do the important work when you're sleepwalking.
