Were Santa's lists semantic?

2 minutes read

Tonight was the night I used to go singing carols around my neighbourhood when I was maybe seven or eight years old. I used to go out and while I was away, Santa would come and bring me presents. My mom would tell me I just missed him. Darn it, I thought, I have to catch him next year. And then I started unwrapping my presents, glad I made it on his nice list again for another year.

I don't believe in nice and naughty lists any more.

I don't believe Santa had any such lists. And if he did, they had better have beeen semantic! (A bit corny, I know, I just had to do it.)

At our very core, I believe we're all nice. We're all kind. We all want to do good. We all want to see good in the world.

We might screw up from time to time. We might miss some alt text. We might misuse some ARIA labels. We might put headings out of order or forget about keyboard navigation. We're not perfect. And that's okay.

We can and want to do better. And for that, we deserve some cookies and milk. And hot cocoa. And putting our feet up and taking a well-deserved break.

No matter what anyone else says, you're on the nice list!

Happy holidays!
